End Of Year Recap On All the FUN STUFF! (Yoga, Creative Movement + Snack Time)

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

We are approaching the end of this school year (2016-2017) and I simply can not believe it! Like, WOW where did the time REALLY go?! But I guess that saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun” can live up to its meaning. This year has definitely been one amazing trip.  I’m so excited to see all of our CES camp excel to the next grade level — they’ve earned it! Although I will really miss my Kindergarteners who’ve been hanging out with me since they were in PK3 🙂

Any who, I’d like to think that a few of our memories from this year will stem from Yoga (with Ms. Ayana), Creative Movement (with Ms. GiGi), free play + snack time. In all classes, there’s nothing like seeing the smiling faces of joy when it’s time to do those activities. And since the weather has been generally nice + beautiful, they prefer to eat their snacks outside, sitting on the benches in the courtyard. How could I say “no” to that?!

Take a moment with me in recapping all of the tons of fun that we’ve had this school year:

Mother’s Day Stuff With Our Friends at Bancroft!

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

Happy belated Mother’s Day to ALL of our wonderful mommies who help make our program a success by allowing your child to share moments with our Bancroft + JO Wilson staff in after school! This has been one extremely fun year and as we prepare to say goodbye to the 2016-2017 school year, we surely made plans to help celebrate you all. This year, all CES after-school classes opened their creative boxes and colored, cut, glued, and pasted some LOVELY projects! Each class made their very own Mother’s Day cards; some for mommies and others for grand mommies! They really took their time and made sure to create something meaningful and express just how much they truly feel about you!

Additionally, we also spent that week reading books centered around mommies (Mama Bears, Mama Bunnies… among others).

Did you love your card? Make sure you pin your coloring sheets up somewhere visible for gentle reminders of just how much you mean to your child(ren)! Oh, but DADS… you’re next!

Here’s what happened…

Easter Outside Play 2017

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

I’m delighted to share with you all some pictures of our Easter adventures held on Good Friday 4/14! Every year, I plan fun week-long activities and an Easter Egg Hunt to close out the week. This year, our CES crew enjoyed various Easter coloring pages, one bunny/egg art + craft and the biggest piece of all — you guessed it, the hunt!

Each class (PK3, PK4 and Kindergarten) had their very own egg hunt in the Bancroft (Sharpe) courtyards at specific times. CUTENESS OVERLOAD as the staff and I watched them search for colorful plastic eggs. Some were even dressed in glitter that contained different prizes!

To go along with the egg hunt, students got to make very their own bags, which served as our mini craft that week. Did you hear about all the fun we had?? If not, check the pictures below to see for yourself:

Bancroft Celebrates… DR. SEUSS Week + Birthday! March 2, 2017

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

We hope that you all are staying safe and warm after “Winter Storm Stella”! I guess I spoke too soon when sharing my excitement about the warmer spring-like weeks that we were getting. Sigh. Mother nature sure knows how to play tricks on us!

Any who, didn’t I tell you guys that the Bancroft crew LOVES to celebrate holidays??? Well, Dr. Seuss is also one of our *faves*. I mean, who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss illustrations and the super silly, tongue twisting rhymes that come with?

This year, we did something a tad bit different. Since each day during Dr. Seuss week was specifically themed by DCPS, we decided to play along; with Wednesday being the most exciting day! Wednesday was “Thing 1 & Thing 2” Day 🙂 Students were encouraged to dress like twins on this day, and in after school, we proceeded to make “Thing 1 & Thing 2” paper bag puppets! The kiddos partnered up and one created a Thing 1 puppet, while the other created a Thing 2 puppet.

Wellllllllll…… let’s take a look at what was created. Do you see your Thing 1 or Thing 2???

This Is How We Celebrated LOVE Day At Bancroft!

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

No holiday goes unnoticed at Bancroft Elementary! We’ve made it a tradition to spend at least one day (or even a week long) celebrating holidays in the forms of:

  • discussion
  • arts/crafts
  • music/dance
  • coloring/drawing
  • and more!

Such was the case for Valentine’s Day! One of my favorites, so we definitely had to spend a couple of days spreading the LOVE ❤ ❤ ❤  We also ended the day with white chocolate kisses + cupcakes!

Parents, what do ya think? Did they enjoy VDay 2017 or what?! We hope that you loved your personalized cards! Take a look:

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! A Time To Reflect…

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

As most of you know, Bancroft takes much time in teaching students HISTORY. This could be American history and/or history centered around specific holidays. Most importantly, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

mlk-day-3

Last week, we prepared for the holiday by celebrating our dear Civil Rights’ activist. We followed suit and joined the entire Bancroft Elementary family in giving lessons about his leadership, life and death.  It’s important to us that we not only have lots of fun in our program, but also take time to teach our kids inspiring history.

***Please stay tuned for additional photos of MLK activities from last week!

Brrrrrrr!! It’s COLD! Here’s What Happens When Our Friends Stay Inside + Warm (Bancroft/JO Wilson)

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

We know how much you all prefer that your child get a breath of fresh air during outside play while hanging out with us. We understand and we do just that majority of our afternoons together. However, winter has finally become consistent, temperature wise and I bet that we all could agree that most days it is just WAY TOO COLD for outside play. Especially since after-school hours start around the time that the sun and temp are both beginning to descend for the evening.  Our rule is that if it’s below 35 degrees, we stay inside where it’s nice + warm.

But no worries! The staff at Bancroft and JO Wilson still allow inside play for our little friends (not as much running around), but  just as feasible + fun!

Generally, we’ll give them FREE PLAY — meaning that we set up fun centers around the classroom and break them into groups. After about 10-15 minutes, they proceed to the next center, and so on.  And I personally like to have KIDS BOP playing in the background also! To give you an idea, centers may consist of (but not limited to):

  • Puzzles
  • Free draw/coloring/crafts
  • Legos
  • Tying shoe strings practice (Kinder)
  • Magnets (building blocks)
  • Reading corner
  • Chatting with teacher (which they get to tell us ALL about their day or whatever else they’d like to share!)

**ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be no school nor after-school on next Monday, January 16, 2017 in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Happy Holidays + Happy New Year From Your Friends At Bancroft!

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

Your friends at Bancroft are delighted to share with you holiday adventures from the last week of after school before the big break! We had such a great time listening + dancing to Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree and many other songs! We also thoroughly enjoyed holiday themed yoga and creative movement with Ms. Ayana + Ms. Gigi!

And then there were craft parties 🙂 Special thanks to Ms. Keith and Ms. Destinee for offering their cool holiday ideas for our friends! Every year it gets better and better. This year however, we designed our very own Christmas Tree ornaments with glitter and cute, jazzy things. Our little friends truly enjoyed this one, and were very happy to create something special to hang on the tree at home!

Additionally, our older friends in Kindergarten were SO fascinated with Rudolph this year, so we let them create their very own reindeer and name them as they wish!

We hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and wishing each of you a Happy New Year! 2017… Yeeaahhh, bring it on!

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well, over at JO Wilson, that is! Looks like our little friends are in the holiday spirit and are ready for the long awaited extended break. There has been music, laughter, silly faces, story time, free play with blocks and puzzles…. and of course, CRAFTS! You know how much we love our creative adventures 🙂

Many, many thanks to all of our JO Wilson teachers and enrichment staff who truly have a passion for what they do and warm patience in working with our CES kiddos during after-school hours.

Come Find Out What’s Going On At J.O. Wilson!

Hi Parents, Guardians + Friends!

We’re back and delighted to share a snippet (or two, three) of our LITTLE FRIENDS over at J.O. Wilson Elementary! They have  been having tons of fun and cool adventures with Site Coordinator Ms. Helene and staff; along with enrichment instructors, Mr. Dale (Capoeira) and Ms. Ayana (Yoga).

It also looks like our friendly Kindergarten faces had a friendship-bracelet and necklace making party! At CES, we truly love arts + crafts because that’s the perfect time to let our students be creative and artsy in their own way; and with their own imagination! Let’s take a look:

PS: Ms. Helene, your friends at Bancroft say HEY!
